Types of E-business Information systems

The types of management information system for business organizations are categorized according to the functions or departments of the organization. For example, sales and marketing department implements sales and marketing systems. Other management information systems include: manufacturing and production systems, human resources management systems, and finance and accounting systems.

Sales and marketing systems are responsible for selling and marketing the products and services of the company. Senior managers plan and develop strategies regarding products and sales, and monitor the performance of competitors (Shajahan & Priyadharshini, 2004). The middle management conducts market research and analyzes sales performance, marketing performance and pricing strategies of the company. The operational management level and employees communicate with customers, process orders and deliver products.

The sales and marketing information system consists of sales data collected from various sources. The data is used to analyze the performance of the sales and marketing function. It is used to generate sales report for management purposes as well as to communicate with customers and get their feedback. Data elements found in the sales information system include the store number, size of sales, volume, item number, unit prize, units sold, color and item description. This sales information is important for strategic decision making and effective communication with the customers.

The manufacturing and production system is responsible for the production of goods and services. It stores data that can be used by the top management to plan for long term manufacturing goals and objectives (Matsuo and Colomo-Palacios, 2013). The middle management helps in the monitoring and management of costs and resources in the organization while the operational managers are concerned with the management of daily production or manufacturing activities. An example of a manufacturing system is the inventory system which manages the flow of inventory information.

The inventory system consists of data elements such as units on order, item code, description, and units delivered. The finance and accounting system is responsible for the management of financial assets, financial records, and capitalization. For example, the payroll system is one of the finance and accounting systems. Accounts receivable system also utilizes management information systems to store and retrieve data of accounts receivable such as credit rating of customer, customer number, name and address, number of credit days, and amount paid.
